Why Do Cats Hate Water

Why Cats Water?

A dislike of water is one of the most prominent traits of household cats. However, this isn't true of all cats. Several big cats, such as tigers, normally put up with dip to cool off or search for prey. Some household breeds are known to enjoy swimming when the opportunity comes.

However, household cats will go to great lengths to avoid getting wet. Some behaviorists have developed a number of theories to explain its reason. One suggests that because the breeds grew up in dry environments and are not exposed to rivers or lakes. These are the factors they are strange with and should be avoided.

Moreover, water's effect on their fur is the reason why cats dislike getting wet. Wet fur is uncomfortable and takes a while to dry, making cats less agile and more sensitive to predators. Cats are careful creatures, that can be an important part of their day to self-care through grooming. Wet fur is extremely uncomfortable for cats and often takes a long time to dry. Wet fur is also heavier than dry and therefore makes a cat less agile and easier for predators to catch. There is also the amazing factor. Accidentally tumbling into a full bathtub can be a frightening experience for a cat and can make it scared of water for the rest of their life.

Furthermore, some seem to appreciate playing with running or dripping water, such as out of a tap. Behaviorists believe cats are attracted by the movement of water and the sounds it makes, these can stimulate a cat’s paws and get wet. Some domestic breeds such as the Maine Coon, Bengal, and Turkish Van, are less frightened of water and enjoy swimming. What makes these breeds unique is the texture of their fur, this makes them water-resistant than other breeds.
