The Japanese breed Akita were bred mainly for hunting and fighting, while the chow Chow were bred for protecting and hunting. These breeds have a long history and are both considered national treasures in their original countries.

Grooming

Both breeds require proper and regular grooming to keep their fur healthy and clean. Unlike the Chow Chow whose fur is longer, the Akitas’ are easy to maintain because it is short to the Chow Chow who needs more attention to prevent matting and tangling. But it is important for both breeds to have proper care for their fur, proper brushing and bathing to avoid ticks and fleas.

Temperament

Although they might have similar traits of being loyal and protective breeds, they also have different temperaments. Akita is known to be more aggressive and protective of its owner, while ChowChow is known for its independence and reserve. Apart from them being loyal and protective, they also tend to be stubborn breeds that require enough training and socialisation.

Exercise

Just as other breeds need enough exercise, they both need exercise too. Akita needs more of a daily exercise compared to chow chow because it is longer in size and muscularly built. Daily walks and play are important  for them because it helps reduce overexertion especially during the hot weather.

Although these beautiful breeds may be stubborn and difficult to train, they are also one of the most intelligent dogs in the world. It is important to make them socialize. Reinforcing positive techniques are very important just as making them obey and listen to their owners, correcting them when they are wrong, these should be done with praise. Staying closer with them and making them family is one thing they love and get happy about. All these can be achieved if only the owners can be consistent and patient to handle these breeds.

Health

Akita and Chow Chow breeds are healthy breeds, but they can be prone to certain health issues. Hip dysplasia, bloat and eye problems are common with the Akita breeds while the Chow Chow breeds are prone to hip dysplasia, allergies to skin and ear problems. Proper check ups and healthy diets can help prevent them from health issues.
