Difference Between Rottweiler and Boerboel

Rottweiler and Boerboel dog breeds are one of the largest dogs in the world. These breeds are mostly used to protect the environment in other words as “guard dogs”. They are also found to be loyal breeds and submissive to their owners. These breeds although have some major differences of which appearance is one. Their coat colour is different; the Boerboels have colours like brindle, tawny, brown and red-brown colours while the Rottweilers are black and patched with brown.

Similarities between the Rottweiler and the Boerboel Breed

The Rottweilers are originally from the large drover dogs of Rome, used as war dogs by the roman army. In the 19th century, this breed became popular as security dogs. They are also known as companions. In terms of body structures, the male is seen to be larger weighing about 43-61 kgs while the female weighs about 37-46 kgs. In terms of their height, the male is about 24-27 inches while the female is about 24-27 inches.

They live for at least 12 years, they have broad jaws and thick skulls. Their eyes are medium brown eyes and ears, they are moderately sized and triangular in shape with their body size as robust, heavy and large muscles. They have round feet which are also compatible. These breeds are also intelligent which is why many security agencies use them as watchdogs.


Similarities between the Rottweiler and the Boerboel Breed

The South African Boerboel as it is commonly known came into South Africa with some immigrants in the 16th and 17th centuries. This breed has some mastiff ancestral look from other mastiff breeds. The Boerboel is a large breed with a heavy boned muscular body with its height at about 20/30 inches. With a huge and heavy head, and a dropping ear. The boerboel breed has a short tail, broad back and deep chest. They also have their coats short and smooth.

This breed was bred to protect farmlands and mainly as watch dogs. They are also friendly to their owners. They need moderate exercise and regular grooming as they are known to be intelligent, confident and self-assured. The training of the boerboel breed should be well planned and should begin at their early days of existence (as puppies). It is recommended its owners are to be super experienced and should have a working understanding of its temperament. Like other breeds, the boerboel breed also has its life span between the ages of 9 to 10.
